Welcome to Victorgardens.com. We are passionate gardeners, and we want to share our love of gardening with the world, so we made this website. Here you will find information on garden accessories, garden fountains, and garden plants. We believe that gardening is an intensely personal pastime, and that like many things today, it has become over-commercialized. That’s why we strive to bring you strictly informative content, and leave out the sales pitch. So whether you’re a veteran green thumb or a newcomer just looking for some tips to help you get started on your first garden, this site is for you.
Gardening is as old as human settlements. The fuel for the switch from a hunter-gatherer style nomadic tribe into sedentary people was agriculture. We learned that we could more effectively grow food than we could hunt it, and that was before we had discovered irrigation. The first farms were little more than gardens planted by innovative thinkers of the time.
As civilization developed, gardening split off from farming in a few important ways. The first major difference that developed was one of scale. Farms started small, but as we learned how to effectively raise crops, the farmland quickly multiplied, and the farmable acreage exploded with the invention of irrigation. That meant that a farm needed to be worked by multiple people, and in the days before machinery, that meant hundreds of laborers for the land owner. This took farms down an industrial path, where the production of the land became the focus.
Gardens on the other hand, took a more artistic and reflective turn. You could certainly enjoy a walk through farm fields; but a garden became a destination for peace, relaxation, and the appreciation of beauty, even in ancient times. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were a multi-tiered wonder full of life, fanciful statues and other garden accessories, as well as one of the most impressive displays of ancient irrigation ever. Of course, the ancient gardens were built for the rich and worked by slave labor, but the goals of ancient gardens are what have carried over into gardening today.
Odds are good that if you want to make a garden today, you’ll be looking to work on a much smaller scale than the ancient wonders of the world. Even the richest of the rich don’t look to pour their fortunes into a monumental garden for the ages these days. However, with the right garden accessories, your garden can be every bit as much of an escape for you as the Hanging Gardens were for Babylon.
The style of garden you choose to make will be heavily influenced by your goals, as well as your climate. On the one hand, a plot of land filled with garden accessories such as yard art or lawn gnomes doesn’t make sense for a vegetable garden, but either would make a great start to a walking garden. Another example: a water garden full of lilies, reeds, and other aquatic garden plants might look great in the Midwest, but it would be a poor choice for someone living in Arizona. Regardless of your climate or goals, you will need some basic tools such as a trowel, hoe, shovel, and shears to tend your garden.
